How to maximise natural light in your home

INSPIRATION

Making the most of natural light is one of the most important considerations in interior design. As well as the many aesthetic benefits that come from having bright, light-filled interiors, it also has vast benefits for our wellbeing.

According to the Australian and New Zealand Mental Health Association, sunlight can boost the brain’s release of serotonin, associated with boosting mood and helping us feel calm and focused, as well as help prevent and treat a range of diseases and conditions.

Natural light is also good for our body clocks. According to the Sleep Foundation, sunlight plays a central role in regulating circadian rhythm, the body’s internal clock that signals when to be alert and when to rest. It also affects the production of melatonin, an essential sleep-promoting hormone.

Dark, damp areas of the home – devoid of natural light and airflow – are also more susceptible to developing mould and mildew, which can lead to a range of health problems in humans. Enabling natural light to fill living areas, and encouraging air to flow throughout, can go a long way towards keeping these issues at bay.

So what can you do to boost natural light in your home?

Choose adjustable window coverings

One of the best ways to maximise the flow of natural light in your home is to choose window coverings that you can adjust depending on the time of day, the outside temperature, or the season.

Luxaflex® Duette® Shades are an ideal option, as they have an innovative ‘top-down-bottom-up’ feature which means you can adjust your shades according to where light flows into a space during the day. They also have a versatile design that caters for arches, angles and skylights.

The Duette® Shades also have the option of Day Night fabric – a sheer fabric that offers UV protection and allows you to have a filtered view, while providing a layer of protection for your windows. Depending on how you want to control the light, the night fabric is either a light filter or blockout fabric – both of which offer total privacy.

Similarly, the Luxaflex® Pirouette® Shadings consist of soft, horizontal fabric vanes which are attached to a single, sheer backing. You can easily adjust these vanes to determine how much light flows through, as well as the extent to which you can see through the sheer, rear fabric.

Recently, Luxaflex added the option of ClearView® backing fabric, which offers all of the stability and UV protection that the range is known for – but with unparalleled views to the outside.

Consider sheer/transparent options for soft light

These days, light doesn’t have to be an ‘all or nothing’ scenario. It’s possible to choose window coverings that allow you to let filtered light in.

Luxaflex® Luminette® Privacy Sheers are a great option when it comes to controlling the amount of light that enters a room. With a softly curved vertical design, and integrated fabric vanes for a striking look, these coverings are ideal for expansive windows or sliding doors, as they accommodate both light control and privacy, and let a soft and flattering light to filter through to the room.

Luxaflex® Silhouette® Shades with Signature S-Vanes also offer a great combination of elegance with functional design, and can transform harsh sunlight light into a gentle, diffused glow.

Match spaces to window coverings

When it comes to window coverings, you certainly don’t need to settle for the same solution in every room. While you may want a consistent look throughout your home, you can achieve this by selecting similar tones, fabrics and styles – not necessarily by installing exactly the same blind or curtains in every room. Think about the individual spaces, the flow of light into that room, how it changes throughout the year, and how the room is used.

In bedrooms, for instance, you may want to select something like Luxaflex® Duette® Architella Shades in block-out fabric, which can ensure privacy and eliminate light during the evening. In a living space, Luxaflex® Curtains may allow the perfect amount of filtered light. And in a bathroom or other wet area, Luxaflex®’s PolySatin Plantation Shutters are ideal as they can be easily adjusted for privacy, yet are impervious to moisture and won’t blister, peel or fade.

Add automated control

You can also add ultra-quiet Powerview® Motorisation to your shades, which allows you to lift them with a remote control or even your smartphone at the touch of a button. You can even program your window coverings to open or close at specific times of the day, with some shades even including temperature sensors for automated operation.
